Yamaha R2 engine and performance
The Yamaha YZF-R2 uses a new 204cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine. It produces 26.5hp and 19.1Nm of peak torque. Yamaha has built the motorcycle around a lightweight diamond frame that weighs 14kg.The R2 has a kerb weight of 149kg, giving it a power-to-weight ratio of 177.85hp per tonne. The motorcycle therefore offers a clear step up in performance over the R15 while retaining a relatively light construction.
Yamaha R2 variants and features
Yamaha will offer the R2 in three variants. All versions get traction control, a slipper clutch, dual-channel ABS and a 5-inch TFT display.The motorcycle also gets three riding modes: Street, Sport and Rain. These modes allow riders to adjust the bike's riding characteristics according to road and weather conditions.
The mid-spec variant adds a bidirectional quickshifter and body-coloured alloy wheels. The range-topping R2M gets an adjustable front fork, adjustable levers and a faux-suede seat, along with cosmetic changes such as embossed badging.
Yamaha R2 price in India
Yamaha has priced the new R2 between Rs 2.30 lakh and Rs 2.53 lakh, ex-showroom Delhi. The base version therefore sits close to the KTM RC 200, which currently carries a starting price of Rs 2.32 lakh.Yamaha will make the R2 available through its Blue Square dealerships from mid-September. Bookings for the motorcycle have already opened with a refundable token amount of Rs 10,000.
Yamaha R2 vs R15
The R2 will sit above the R15 in Yamaha's Indian line-up, while the R15 will continue to be sold alongside the new motorcycle. The R15 has remained an important model for Yamaha in India since its launch in 2008.With the R2, Yamaha is targeting riders looking for more performance without moving into the larger and more expensive supersport segment.
