Maruti Suzuki India on Wednesday said it has commissioned a 1 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at its Kharkhoda manufacturing facility in Haryana as part of its efforts to improve renewable energy utilisation and reduce carbon emissions.

The battery storage system has been integrated into the plant's internal electricity distribution network as a pilot project, the company said in a statement.

Maruti Suzuki had commissioned a 20 MWp solar power project at the Kharkhoda facility in 2025. However, surplus solar power generated during plant holidays could not be utilised due to the absence of demand.

The BESS will store excess electricity generated during low-demand periods and make it available when required, helping improve the utilisation of renewable energy. The system is also expected to enhance grid stability.

Maruti Suzuki India Managing Director and CEO Hisashi Takeuchi said the initiative is aligned with India's focus on building self-reliant energy ecosystems.

"With a lifecycle of about 15 years, BESS will help to reduce nearly 54 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually," he said.

Highlighting the company's sustainability goals, Takeuchi added, "Our production volumes will increase from current levels. Despite this, we remain committed to lower Scope 1 & 2 emissions not only in terms of CO2 intensity but also in absolute CO2 emission in manufacturing."
