Hyundai targets 2.5 lakh annual Creta, Bayon sales as it steps up India SUV push

By FY27, Hyundai Motor India plans to roll out two mass-market SUVs, with one being an electric model. The firm anticipates selling 250,000 units of the Creta and Bayon in 2027, with SUV sales comprising 75% of total sales by FY28, up from 68-69% ...

Hyundai Motor India expects the introduction of two mass-market SUVs including an electric vehicle in the second half of FY27 to inject greater thrust into its efforts to expand its presence in the domestic car industry.

Tarun Garg, managing director at Hyundai Motor India told ET that the company is aiming to sell at least 250,000 units of the Creta and the new Bayon in 2027 as it looks to maintain leadership in the fast-growing mid-size SUV segment, up from 170,000 units this calendar year.

“Along with Creta and Bayon, we are looking at a volume of over 250,000 units per annum going forward,” he said. “With this volume, very clearly, we can continue with our segment leadership in the mid-SUV segment. And 250,000 units is not a limit; it is a baseline; we will continue to grow.”

The mid-size utility vehicle segment, which includes models between 4-4.4 meters in length (SUVs and MPVs), accounted for around 900,000 units in FY26, per data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM). The segment contributed nearly 35% of Hyundai’s total domestic sales in FY26.

“Both the models we have scheduled for launch this fiscal are mass-market products,” he said. “While Bayon (launched Monday) is positioned in one of the fastest growing segments (mid SUV), our grounds up mass market EV will come in early next calendar year. With this we are targeting outperforming the market and regaining our magnet share.”

The local car market is expected to grow at about 5-6%, on a high base, in the second half of FY27, said Garg. Hyundai is aiming to outperform the industry with a more than 8% sales growth in the same period, he said.

Garg said the company expects to generate nearly 75% of total sales from SUVs starting FY28, up from 68-69% currently.

The new Bayon, at a starting ex-showroom price of Rs 9.99 lakh, is positioned between the sub 4-meter compact SUV Venue and mid-size SUV Creta in Hyundai’s portfolio. The automaker is adding the model as it seeks to expand in the segment with a second product, while Creta sales have come under pressure of late.

Hyundai previously had only the Creta in this segment, compared with three models from Maruti Suzuki – Grand Vitara, Victoris, and Ertiga – and two from Tata Motors— Curvv and Sierra.

Creta sales fell more than 9% year-on-year to 89,727 units in the fiscal first half, underperforming a more than 50% surge in industry volumes. Garg cited limited supplies of diesel models to the market as a reason, saying the diesel variant of Creta has a waiting period of more than one month.

Hyundai will manufacture the Bayon at its Chennai plant. He said the model will help raise utilisation at the plant after the production of Venue was moved to the new Pune facility. With Bayon, the automaker now has 10 models in its portfolio—six SUVs, two sedans and two hatchbacks across diesel, petrol and CNG and electric offerings.

In May 2025, Hyundai announced plans to launch 26 models in India by the end of this decade. This will include 20 internal combustion engine or ICE vehicles and six EVs, comprising a mix of all-new models, full model changes, and product enhancements to its existing portfolio. The South Korean parent recently committed $15.5 billion investment in India by 2032.
