The revised draft for the scrapping policy in the national capital says that if you buy a new car and scrap the old one, you could get a straight discount of Rs 50,000 on the road tax. The draft framed by the transport department will be out for the public for thoughts and ideas once it is approved by Finance Department of the union territory.
"The new policy is being brought to encourage and incentivise people to scrap old and polluting vehicles and buy new ones," ToI reported quoting a senior official.
What does the draft policy say?
Car owners will be able to enjoy significant concessions of up to Rs 50,000 in road tax based on the scrapped vehicle's age and type if the draft which is still under discussion comes into effect.
As per the draft policy, personal car owners scrapping vehicles over 15 years old could see a maximum reduction of Rs 50,000, while commercial vehicle owners might receive a lower concession.
Earlier, teams of Delhi's Transport department had started seizing these impounded vehicles if they were found to be parked in public spaces or driving on public roads. But, this measure of transport department was stopped after Delhi High Court’s intervention.
To get their vehicles back, a policy was being framed last month as per which owners need to pay a fine of up to Rs 10,000 promising they won't park them in public spaces or drive them on public roads. If they need to take an old car for repairs, they have to tell the authorities and use a hired lorry or carriage to transport it.
