New Delhi: Korean auto major Hyundai Thursday launched the all new i20 priced between Rs 6.79-11.17 lakh (ex-showroom, India) to take on the likes of Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Volkswagen Polo and Honda Jazz.

The new i20 is available in both petrol and diesel engine options, across three powertrains – 1 litre turbo petrol, 1.2 litre kappa petrol, 1.5 litre diesel.

Hyundai i20 aims to target leadership position in the segment with the new launch. Hyundai Motor India Managing Director S S Kim, said, “Hyundai has been catering to the rapidly evolving new-age customers in the domestic and global markets…Hyundai also offers one of the widest choice of powertrain options…With the all new i20, Hyundai will once again re-establish its dominance in the premium hatchback segment.”

The outgoing version had market share of 27% in 2020, despite lacking a diesel engine and petrol automatic transmission options.

While sales of passenger vehicles cumulatively have declined due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic till October this year, the share of premium hatchbacks in the compact car segment has been on a rise, shooting up to 27% in 2020, from 2% in 2008. Hyundai intends to strengthen its presence further in the local market with its latest launch.

Hyundai i20 is the fifth launch for the company this year, after entry sedan Aura, midsize sedan Verna, SUVs Creta and Tucson.
