SIAM : Passenger vehicle sales drop marginally in December

Even as deep discounts helped push up retail sales, wholesale volumes of passenger vehicle declined marginally last month as carmakers attempted to correct inventory which had piled up post the lacklustre festive season.

According to data released by industry body Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) passenger vehicle sales last month dropped by 0.43% to 238692 units. Sales of commercial vehicles in the month under review declined 7.80% to 75984 units. Two-wheeler sales too went down by 2.23% to 1259026 units. Vehicle sales across categories decreased by 2.97% to 1617356 units.

Industry executives are hopeful with fuel prices coming down and liquidity improving in the market past few week, consumer sentiments will improve further going ahead.


For the entire calendar year, passenger vehicle sales rose 5% to 3394757 units. Commercial vehicle sales went up by 27% to 1005380 units. Two-wheeler sales increased by 12.84% to 21645169 units.
