Maruti Suzuki bets on Victoris, 5-star safety, hybrid options, rival to Creta & Seltos
Revving up its midsize SUV game, Maruti Suzuki on Wednesday unveiled the all-new Victoris, as the nation’s top carmaker scrambles to counter slowing demand for its bread-and-butter small cars.

The country's largest carmaker currently sells SUV models like Fronx, Brezza, Jimny and Grand Vitara in the domestic market.

The launch is aimed squarely at rivals like the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Skoda Kushaq, and Volkswagen Taigun. Positioned between the Brezza and the Grand Vitara, the new Victoris is expected to offer buyers a more spacious alternative to the Brezza while keeping prices more competitive than Nexa’s Grand Vitara.

"We are confident that Victoris will resonate with new age customers in India and across global markets. We will begin export of Victoris to over 100 countries soon," said Hisashi Takeuchi, MD and CEO of Maruti and Suzuki. "For environment conscious customers, we are offering Victoris with multiple powertrain options including strong hybrid and CNG."

Additionally, the new launch has also earned a 5-star Bharat NCAP rating, said Maruti Suzuki MD Hisashi Takeuchi. The model would be sold out from the company's Arena sales network and compete with the likes of Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos and Honda Elevate.

Maruti Suzuki did not reveal the prices of the new model but noted that the company has invested around Rs 1,240 crore in the development of the Victoris. However, the automaker has started taking bookings for Victoris with an initial deposit of Rs 11,000.

The new SUV is the second product from Suzuki globally in this category, underscoring India’s central role in the company’s growth strategy. The company “is struggling to regain lost market share due to continued weakness in its mainstay mini and compact segments, despite a recovery in output and strengthening of its SUV product portfolio,” Tatsuo Yoshida, a senior autos analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence, wrote in a March report.
