Hyundai Motor India on Thursday launched a usage-based insurance programme that could help eligible Bluelink-connected car owners save up to 15% on the own-damage portion of their insurance premiums for safe driving.

The initiative is aimed at expanding the benefits of connected-car technology beyond convenience and safety.

The programme will assess customers' driving patterns over the preceding three months and assign them a score that participating insurers can use to determine additional benefits at the time of policy renewal.

The initiative is aimed at rewarding safer driving rather than relying solely on conventional insurance pricing models.

Customers with insurance renewals due within the next 90 days will be able to view their UBI scores through Hyundai's Bluelink app and choose to share them with insurers, subject to their consent, while a score of 70 or above may make customers eligible for insurance benefits.

How Hyundai's usage-based insurance works

The score will be calculated using vehicle data collected through Hyundai's Bluelink connected-car platform, without requiring customers to install additional devices.

Key parameters include driving dynamics such as rapid acceleration, deceleration and braking, speed control and idling behaviour.

Customers scoring below the eligibility threshold can use personalised driving tips available through the app to improve their driving habits and potentially qualify for benefits at a subsequent renewal.

Hyundai India Insurance Broking (HIIB) will act as an intermediary between the automaker and participating insurers, facilitating the sharing of driving scores with customer consent.

The programme's first phase will include Cholamandalam MS General Insurance, Go Digit General Insurance and ICICI Lombard General Insurance.

Hyundai Motor India MD and CEO Tarun Garg said the company had more than 0.8 million connected cars on Indian roads and was targeting one million cumulative connected-car sales by 2027 and two million by 2030 through its Bluelink platform.
