Sources said the opening of the illegal telephone exchange and Mumbai terror strikes on the same day is not a mere coincidence. The people running it had obtained connections on fake I-cards which had taken a while in coming. Why they chose November 26 to start operation in Mohali needs deeper probe, said a police officer.
Subsequent investigations have revealed that after its opening, majority of calls were made to countries like Bangladesh, Dubai, Philippines and Canada. It is the Dubai and Bangladesh calls that have left police officers scratching their head.
While Bangladesh is known for providing shelter to organizations like the HuJI and Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangaldesh (JMB), calls made to Dubai too are being looked at closely due to the presence of a host of fugitives in that country wanted in India. The Mohali police came to know about the telephone exchange right under its nose after Puneet Palsania, a representative of Connect Telecom Company, approached Mohali SSP Jatinder Singh Aulakh.
In his complaint , Palsania said that within days of obtaining the connection, several long calls were made to foreign destinations. While two persons have been arrested, main accused Satya Parkash, who had obtained the connections, is absconding.
