For consumer products, getting noticed is only the first challenge. Getting chosen, used, and chosen again is harder.

Across finance, technology, mobility, retail, food and healthcare, consumers have more options than before and increasingly little reason to settle for products that do not deliver. As a result, product success is being judged less by the promise made at launch and more by what happens after the product reaches the market.

The Economic Times Product of the Year Awards 2026 examine this shift through the Commercial Category, recognising products that combine innovation with evidence of consumer adoption, engagement and market performance.

It brings together 17 categories spanning Banking Products, Credit Cards, Payments and Consumer Fintech, Insurance, Wealth and Investment Platforms, Smartphones, Consumer Electronics, Home and Kitchen Appliances, Wearables and Hearables, Consumer Apps, Quick Commerce and Retail, Electric Vehicles, Food and Beverage, Beauty and Personal Care, D2C Products, Healthcare and MedTech, and Wellness and Fitness.

Each category reflects a different way in which products are competing for a place in consumers' lives.

Financial products, for instance, are increasingly defined by behaviour rather than availability. Banking Products look at adoption and depth of engagement, while Credit Cards bring actual spend, activation and portfolio momentum into focus. Payments and Consumer Fintech look at transaction scale and habit formation, while Insurance considers policy adoption and the experience around purchase and claims. For Wealth and Investment Platforms, investor growth and genuine engagement matter beyond the number of accounts opened.

In consumer technology, the market itself becomes the test. Smartphones are assessed on their performance in India rather than global specifications, while Consumer Electronics considers segment performance and the value delivered at the price point. Home and Kitchen Appliances bring everyday utility and energy efficiency into the picture. For Wearables and Hearables, the question is whether consumers continue to use the product and whether it delivers meaningful health or everyday outcomes.

The same distinction extends to digital and emerging consumer categories. Consumer Apps are evaluated on real usage and stickiness rather than downloads alone. Quick Commerce and Retail look at order scale, retention and delivery reliability. Electric Vehicles bring sales, real-world range and charging experience into the assessment.

For categories closer to everyday consumption, Food and Beverage, Beauty and Personal Care, and D2C Products focus on distribution, repeat purchase, commercial performance, and product-led growth. In Healthcare and MedTech, clinical adoption and measurable outcomes take precedence, while Wellness and Fitness look for sustained adoption and credible evidence of outcomes.

Across these categories, the awards provide an opportunity for products to demonstrate their impact through evidence of adoption, execution, innovation, and market performance.

In a crowded consumer landscape, product success cannot be measured by functionality or launch momentum alone. It is reflected in the consumers who choose a product, the value it creates, the problems it solves and the place it earns in everyday life.

The ET Product of the Year Awards 2026 bring these dimensions together to recognise commercial products that are not simply competing for consumer attention, but are creating lasting impact in the markets they serve.
