A young founder building an AI today may have access to tools that once required a larger engineering team and substantially greater resources. Turning that access into a viable business, however, still requires a clear understanding of the problem, sound product decisions and the ability to earn customers' trust.

The shift is becoming visible in India's startup ecosystem. The Economic Times reported in January 2026 that investors were backing younger AI founders, with one investor noting that the median age of founders backed by their fund had fallen to 29 in 2025, from 35 in 2023. Investors cited the falling cost of technology development and easier access to AI capabilities among the factors contributing to the change.

For young professionals, the opportunity extends beyond starting a company. They may be developing AI applications, leading research, building technical infrastructure or introducing AI into business operations. Their contribution is best understood through the problems they solve and the results they achieve, rather than their age alone.

What distinguishes young AI leadership?

Technical familiarity can provide an early advantage, but leadership demands more. Building an AI requires decisions about its intended users, reliability, deployment and commercial viability. In an organisation, the challenge may involve getting teams to adopt a system, integrating it into existing processes or demonstrating that it delivers a worthwhile outcome.

The ability to make those decisions, take responsibility for execution and learn from setbacks distinguishes meaningful leadership from experimentation. For entrepreneurs, it may be the difference between a promising demonstration and a product that customers continue to use. For young professionals within larger organisations, it may mean taking ownership of a project with consequences beyond their immediate team.

Recognition that looks at the work

The AI Young Leader of the Year (<30) category at the ET AI Awards 2027 provides a platform to recognise individuals under 30 contributing to the development and application of AI. Their work can be considered in the context of the innovation they bring, the challenges they address and the impact they demonstrate.

Recognition also gives the industry a way to identify emerging talent whose contributions might otherwise remain within a startup, research team or individual organisation. For young leaders, it offers an opportunity to put their achievements forward and have them considered alongside the work of their peers.
