Road construction in India per day improved to 27 km in FY18 from 12.1 km in FY15 on account of better execution. According to the data presented by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the total construction of national highways increased to 9,829 kilometres (km) in FY18 from 4,410 km three years ago. This implies an annual growth of 30.6 per cent. For FY19, road construction is expected to reach 12,000 km. The faster growth was due to the higher pace of awarding of road projects both by NHAI and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH).

According to analyst estimates, the two government agencies have together awarded 24,452 km of projects in FY18 compared with 11,039 km in FY15. The rapid execution is reflected in the financial performance of the road construction companies. Leading companies in the sector like Dilip Buildcon, KNR Constructions, PNC Infratech and Sadbhav Infra have recorded a 15-35 per cent growth in revenues in the past one-and-a-half years.
