Chidambaram's agenda for Mumbai cops: No mafia, extortion, land and loan sharks

While some of the proposed steps are not new, such as establishing a 24X7 control room to be headed by a young and energetic officer of the rank of Dy SP/SP in each shift, the CM meeting the Home Minister, Chief Secretary, DGP, DG/IG [Intelligence] and Commissioner of Police [CoP] of the state capital every morning, it is his specific suggestion on ridding state capitals and all major cities/towns of the mafia, extortionists, land and loan sharks that's raised eyebrows in the city's police force.
"The DGP/CoP/SP should draw up a plan to identify these gangs/sharks and send a clear message to them that they should leave the city/town immediately. The police know how to carry out this task," Chidambaram has said in the letter.
City cops are in no doubt that Chidambaram's jibe (The police know how to carry out this task) is aimed at them.
Sources said the minister is pointing to gangster Dawood Ibrahim's network.
City police commissioner Hasan Gafoor said his policemen are ready to face any challenge. Director General of Police A N Roy was not available for comment despite repeated attempts.
