Pradosh Vrat is a significant Hindu fasting observance dedicated to Lord Shiva, observed on Trayodashi Tithi, the 13th day of the lunar fortnight. The word “Pradosh” refers to the evening period around sunset, which is considered especially auspicious for worshipping Shiva. Devotees observe a fast and perform Shiva Puja during Pradosh Kaal, seeking Lord Shiva’s blessings and spiritual well-being. According to religious tradition, worshipping Mahadev during this sacred period is associated with devotion, purification and the removal of obstacles. Pradosh Vrat occurs twice in every lunar month, once during Shukla Paksha and once during Krishna Paksha.

For devotees in Delhi, the practical takeaway is simple: perform Shiva Puja during the 6:35 PM-8:52 PM Pradosh window, rather than treating the entire Trayodashi period as the Puja Muhurat.

A Thursday Pradosh is called Guru Pradosh or Brihaspati Pradosh. Traditional Pradosh Katha collections include a separate Brihaspati Pradosh narrative involving Devaguru Brihaspati and the gods' worship of Lord Shiva.

Pradosh Vrat Katha

There are multiple traditional Pradosh Vrat Kathas, including separate stories associated with different weekdays. Pradosh Katha collections list distinct narratives for Bhauma, Guru, Soma, Shani and other Pradosh observances.

One widely circulated traditional Pradosha narrative tells the story of King Satyaratha and his son Dharmagupta. In traditional retellings associated with the Pradosha Mahatmya, Satyaratha of Vidarbha loses his life and kingdom in war. His infant son Dharmagupta is left without royal protection.

A poor Brahmin widow named Uma finds the child and raises him alongside her own son. Despite their poverty, the boys eventually come under the guidance of Sage Shandilya, who explains the importance of worshipping Lord Shiva during Pradosh.

The boys follow the prescribed observance and continue their Shiva worship. Dharmagupta eventually meets Anshumati, a Gandharva princess. Her father, Dravika, learns of Dharmagupta's devotion and receives divine instruction connected with Lord Shiva. With the Gandharvas' help, Dharmagupta defeats his enemies and regains his kingdom.

The story is traditionally understood as emphasizing devotion, discipline, patience and continued Shiva worship even during difficult circumstances. It should not, however, be treated as the only Pradosh Katha, since different traditions preserve separate weekday-specific narratives.

For September specifically, devotees may also choose the Bhauma Pradosh Katha on September 8 and the Brihaspati/Guru Pradosh Katha on September 24.
