The name Parivartini refers to a change or turning over. According to Hindu tradition, this Ekadashi is associated with Lord Vishnu turning over in His cosmic sleep during Chaturmas. The day is therefore considered especially significant for Vishnu worship, fasting, prayer and spiritual reflection.

According to the traditional Vrat Katha, Lord Krishna narrated the greatness of Parivartini Ekadashi to Arjuna. The story is associated with Lord Vamana and King Bali. King Bali was a powerful and devoted ruler who had conquered the three worlds through his strength and religious merit. To restore balance, Lord Vishnu appeared as Vamana, a dwarf Brahmin.Vamana asked King Bali for three paces of land. After Bali agreed, Vamana assumed a gigantic form and covered the earth and heavens in two steps. With no space left for the third step, Bali offered his own head. Pleased by Bali's devotion and surrender, Lord Vishnu granted him His protection and blessings. The story is traditionally connected with the spiritual significance of Parsva Ekadashi, highlighting devotion, humility, surrender and faith in Lord Vishnu.
