Begin by cleaning the puja area and taking a bath before the ritual. Place a clean red or yellow cloth on the puja platform and prepare the area for the Kalash.Take a small quantity of clean soil in a vessel and sow barley seeds (jau) in it. Fill the Kalash with clean water and add items traditionally used in your family custom, such as akshat, coins and betel nut. Place mango leaves around the mouth of the Kalash and cover it with a coconut wrapped or decorated with a red cloth.
The Kalash is then placed over or beside the barley bed, followed by Sankalp, invocation of Goddess Durga, Ganesh Puja and Devi Puja. Light the diya and incense and offer flowers, kumkum, akshat, fruits and bhog.
Devotees may then recite Durga Saptashati, Devi Kavach, Argala Stotra, Keelak Stotra or Durga mantras, depending on their tradition.
The barley planted during Ghatasthapana is allowed to grow throughout Navratri and is traditionally considered a symbol of prosperity, growth and auspiciousness.
