Masik Shivratri October 2026: Date, Puja Muhurat, Shivling Abhishek Vidhi and Significance

Masik Shivratri October 2026 will be observed on Thursday, October 8, during Krishna Paksha Chaturdashi of the Ashwin lunar month. Masik Shivratri, also known as Monthly Shivratri, is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is observed every month on the Chaturdashi Tithi of the waning Moon.

Unlike Maha Shivratri, which is celebrated once a year, Masik Shivratri gives devotees a monthly opportunity to worship Lord Shiva, observe a fast, perform Shivling Abhishek and spend the night in prayer and meditation.

In October 2026, the Chaturdashi Tithi begins at around 10:15 PM on October 8 and ends at 9:35 PM on October 9 in the Delhi region. Since Shivratri is determined by the presence of Chaturdashi during the night, the vrat will be observed on October 8.

Masik Shivratri October 2026 Puja Muhurat

The Nishita Kaal, or midnight period, is considered the most important time for Shivratri worship. On October 8, 2026, the Nishita Kaal in Delhi is approximately 11:44 PM to 12:33 AM. This is the main window for performing Shiva Puja and Shivling Abhishek.

Devotees who wish to perform Shiva Puja in four Prahars can divide the night into four worship periods. For New Delhi, the approximate four Prahar timings are:

  • First Prahar: 5:59 PM to 9:04 PM
  • Second Prahar: 9:04 PM to 12:08 AM
  • Third Prahar: 12:08 AM to 3:13 AM
  • Fourth Prahar: 3:13 AM to 6:18 AM on October 9
Devotees do not necessarily have to perform all four Prahar pujas. Those unable to stay awake throughout the night can perform their main worship during Nishita Kaal.

Why Is Masik Shivratri Observed?

Masik Shivratri occurs every month on Krishna Paksha Chaturdashi, the 14th lunar day of the waning phase of the Moon. The night is traditionally associated with Shiva worship, meditation, fasting and spiritual discipline.

Lord Shiva is worshipped as the embodiment of transformation, detachment and consciousness. Therefore, Masik Shivratri is considered an appropriate time to seek inner peace, overcome negative thoughts and strengthen one's spiritual discipline.

Masik Shivratri Shivling Abhishek Vidhi

Shivling Abhishek is one of the most important rituals performed on Masik Shivratri. Devotees can perform the puja at a Shiva temple or at home if they have a properly installed Shivling for worship.

Step 1: Take a bath and clean the puja space

Devotees should take a bath and wear clean clothes before beginning the vrat and puja. Clean the place where the Shivling will be worshipped and arrange the puja items.

Step 2: Take the Sankalp

Before beginning the fast, devotees can take a simple Sankalp in front of Lord Shiva. Mentally express your intention to observe the Masik Shivratri vrat with devotion and discipline.

Step 3: Perform the initial Abhishek

Begin by offering clean water to the Shivling. Gangajal may also be used if available. The water should be offered gently while chanting: Om Namah Shivaya

Step 4: Offer Panchamrit

Devotees may perform Panchamrit Abhishek using a mixture traditionally prepared from milk, curd, honey, ghee and sugar. After offering Panchamrit, wash the Shivling again with clean water.

Step 5: Offer Bel Patra

Offer fresh Bel Patra to Lord Shiva. The leaves should be clean and preferably offered with devotion while chanting the Shiva mantra. Other traditional offerings can include flowers and seasonal fruits.

Step 6: Offer Dhoop and Deep

Light a diya and incense and offer them before Lord Shiva. Devotees can then perform aarti and recite Shiva mantras, Shiva Chalisa or other prayers according to their family tradition.

Step 7: Perform Jap and Meditation

Chanting Om Namah Shivaya is particularly common during Shiva worship. Devotees may also meditate quietly after the Abhishek. The focus of the ritual should be devotion rather than the number of offerings.

Masik Shivratri Vrat Vidhi

Many devotees observe a fast on Masik Shivratri. The nature of the fast can differ according to health, family tradition and personal capacity. Some devotees observe a Nirjala fast, while others consume fruits, milk, water or vrat-friendly foods. Those who are elderly, pregnant, unwell or taking regular medication should not undertake a strict fast without appropriate medical advice.

A typical observance includes waking up early, taking a bath, taking the Sankalp, worshipping Lord Shiva and maintaining spiritual discipline throughout the day.

Masik Shivratri and Guru Pradosh Vrat on October 8

October 8, 2026, is particularly notable because Guru Pradosh Vrat and Masik Shivratri occur on the same date. Pradosh Vrat is observed on Trayodashi and is also dedicated to Lord Shiva, with worship performed during the Pradosh period around sunset.

This creates an extended period of Shiva worship, beginning around the evening Pradosh period and continuing into the Shivratri night. Devotees who observe both traditions can follow the specific rituals and fasting rules applicable to each vrat.
