(Karwa Chauth Vrat Katha in Hindi)

Karwa Chauth Vrat Katha in English

Long ago, a Brahmin named Vedsharma lived with his wife, Leelavati, in a town. They had seven sons and one daughter named Veeravati. As the only sister of seven brothers, Veeravati was dearly loved by her entire family. When she came of age, she was married to a worthy young Brahmin.

After her marriage, Veeravati visited her parental home and observed the Karwa Chauth fast along with her sisters-in-law. She began fasting in the morning without food or water. As the day passed, hunger and thirst weakened her, and by evening, she fainted.

Her seven brothers were distressed to see their beloved sister in such a condition. Unable to bear her suffering, they decided to find a way to help her. One of the brothers climbed a distant tree and lit a lamp behind a sieve, creating a glow that resembled the rising moon.

The brothers told Veeravati that the moon had risen. Believing them, she offered water to what she thought was the moon and sat down to eat, intending to break her fast.

According to the traditional story, she found a hair in her first mouthful. As she took the second, she sneezed. Before she could take the third mouthful, a message arrived from her in-laws' home informing her that her husband had died.

Devastated by the news, Veeravati was overwhelmed with grief and hurried to her husband's home. On the way, she met Indrani, the wife of Lord Indra, and asked why such misfortune had come upon her. Indrani explained that Veeravati had broken her fast before the actual moonrise, which had led to her suffering.

Indrani advised her to observe Karwa Chauth with complete devotion and follow the monthly Chauth fasts throughout the year. Veeravati accepted her advice and observed the fasts with faith and dedication.

When the next Karwa Chauth arrived, Veeravati observed the vrat and performed the puja with full devotion. According to the katha, the merit of her devotion and fasting brought her husband back to life. Her married life was restored, and happiness returned to her home.

Since then, Karwa Chauth has been observed with faith and devotion by married women who pray for their husbands' long life, good health and the well-being of their married lives. The vrat is associated with the blessings of Karwa Mata and Goddess Parvati.

May Karwa Mata protect every woman's marital happiness and bless all families with peace and prosperity.
