Janmashtami 2026 will be celebrated on September 4, marking the birth of Lord Krishna. Janmashtami 2026 Date and Puja Time

Janmashtami 2026: Friday, September 4

The main Krishna Janmashtami celebration takes place around midnight because Lord Krishna is traditionally believed to have been born during Nishita Kaal. For New Delhi, the Nishita Puja Muhurat is approximately 11:57 PM on September 4 to 12:43 AM on September 5. Since puja timings can vary by location, devotees should check their local Panchang for the most accurate timings. The festival continues into September 5, when many places celebrate Dahi Handi, inspired by Krishna's childhood love for butter and curd.

Janmashtami 2026 Home Puja Checklist

Before September 4, prepare the following items so you do not have to rush during the festival.

Krishna Idol or Laddu Gopal

The most important item is a Lord Krishna or Laddu Gopal idol. Clean the idol and prepare fresh clothes and decorations beforehand. You can decorate Krishna with: New clothes, Mukut or crown, Peacock feather, Flute, Garland, Jewellery, Sandalwood paste and Flowers.

Panchamrit Ingredients

Panchamrit is traditionally used during Krishna abhishek. You can prepare it using: Milk, Curd, Honey, Ghee and Sugar. Some devotees also use Gangajal as part of the ritual.

Tulsi Leaves

Keep fresh Tulsi leaves ready for the offering. Tulsi is considered especially sacred in Vaishnava worship and is traditionally offered to Lord Krishna.

Krishna Bhog

Prepare the bhog before the midnight puja. Popular Janmashtami offerings include: Makhan-mishri, Milk, Kheer, Peda, Panjiri, Fruits, Makhana, Dhaniya panjiri or Homemade sweets.

Puja Essentials

Keep these items ready: Diya, Cotton wicks, Ghee or oil, Incense sticks, Camphor, Flowers, Tulsi leaves, Kumkum, Sandalwood, Akshat, Panchamrit, Water, Bell, Conch and Clean cloth. Having everything prepared in advance makes the midnight puja much easier.

Janmashtami 2026 Puja Vidhi at Home

You don't need an elaborate setup to celebrate Janmashtami. A simple, devotional puja can be performed at home.

Step 1: Clean Your Home and Puja Area

Clean the house, particularly the area where Krishna's idol will be placed. Decorate the space with flowers, lights, rangoli or a small Krishna jhanki.

Step 2: Place Krishna's Idol

Place the Krishna idol on a clean platform or decorated swing. Keep the idol facing a suitable direction according to your family's puja tradition.

Step 3: Perform Krishna Abhishek

At Nishita Kaal, gently perform the idol's abhishek using Panchamrit and clean water. Avoid using anything that could damage the idol's material.

Step 4: Dress Krishna

After the abhishek, gently dry the idol and dress Krishna in clean clothes. Add the crown, jewellery, garland, flute and peacock feather.

Step 5: Offer Tulsi and Bhog

Offer fresh Tulsi leaves, flowers and Krishna's favourite traditional bhog. Makhan-mishri is particularly associated with Krishna's childhood stories.

Step 6: Chant Krishna Mantras

You can chant: “Hare Krishna Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama, Rama Rama Hare Hare.”

You may also recite Krishna stotras, Bhagavad Gita verses or simply chant “Radhe Krishna” with devotion.

Step 7: Perform Midnight Aarti

At the time of Krishna's birth, perform aarti, ring the bell and, if part of your tradition, blow the conch. This is the spiritual highlight of the Janmashtami celebration.
