Why Is Indira Ekadashi Important?

Indira Ekadashi is considered particularly significant because it occurs during Pitru Paksha, the period traditionally dedicated to remembering and honouring ancestors. Devotees combine Ekadashi worship with prayers, tarpan or other ancestral observances according to their family traditions.

According to the traditional Indira Ekadashi Vrat Katha, observing the fast with devotion is associated with helping an ancestor attain liberation from a difficult afterlife and ultimately reach a higher spiritual state. The observance also centres on Lord Vishnu, with devotees seeking spiritual purification, forgiveness and divine blessings.

Indira Ekadashi 2026 Vrat Katha

The traditional story of Indira Ekadashi revolves around King Indrasena. King Indrasena was a righteous ruler and a devotee of Lord Vishnu. One day, the sage Narada came to his court and told him that his father had been residing in Yamaloka. The king became deeply concerned and asked Narada how he could help his father.

Narada advised the king to observe Indira Ekadashi, which falls during Krishna Paksha of the Ashwin month. He explained that the king should observe the fast with devotion and perform the prescribed rituals for Lord Vishnu.

King Indrasena followed the instructions and observed the Ekadashi vrat with his family. According to the traditional account, the merit of his observance helped his father attain liberation from Yamaloka and ascend to heaven.
