3. Decorate and worship Govardhan

Apply roli, kumkum and sandalwood paste to the symbolic hill. Offer flowers, Akshat, incense, a ghee diya and water. Place fruits, sweets and traditional food preparations before the Govardhan representation.

4. Worship Lord Krishna

Place an idol or picture of Lord Krishna near the Govardhan Hill. Offer Tulsi leaves, flowers, butter, milk, curd and sweets. Chant Krishna mantras and recite prayers dedicated to Govardhan.

5. Perform Govardhan Aarti

Light a diya and perform the aarti of Lord Krishna and Govardhan Maharaj. Family members can sing devotional songs and pray for the well-being, protection and prosperity of their households.

6. Offer Annakut Bhog

Prepare a variety of vegetarian dishes, sweets, fruits and traditional delicacies. Arrange these offerings in the form of a food mountain, known as Annakut. Offer the food to Lord Krishna before distributing it as prasad.

7. Perform Govardhan Parikrama

Devotees traditionally walk around the symbolic Govardhan Hill as an act of devotion. In Mathura and Vrindavan, pilgrims also undertake the sacred Govardhan Parikrama, which covers approximately 21 kilometres around the actual hill.

8. Distribute prasad

Conclude the puja by distributing Annakut prasad among family members, neighbours and other devotees. Sharing food is an important part of the festival and reflects gratitude and community spirit.

The traditional worship sequence includes offerings such as flowers, fragrance, incense, lamps, food, water and dakshina.

Govardhan Puja Mantras to Chant During Worship

Chanting Lord Krishna's names and Govardhan-related prayers is considered auspicious during the festival. Devotees can recite the following simple mantras while performing the puja.

1. Lord Krishna Mantra

ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय॥

Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya.

Meaning: I bow to Lord Vasudeva, the Supreme Divine, and seek his blessings and protection.

2. Govardhan Mantra

ॐ गोवर्धनाय नमः॥

Om Govardhanaya Namah.

Meaning: I offer my prayers and salutations to Govardhan Maharaj.

3. Krishna Gayatri Mantra

ॐ देवकीनन्दनाय विद्महे वासुदेवाय धीमहि। तन्नो कृष्णः प्रचोदयात्॥

Om Devakinandanaya Vidmahe Vasudevaya Dhimahi, Tanno Krishnah Prachodayat.

Meaning: May we meditate upon Lord Krishna, the son of Devaki and Vasudeva. May he guide and illuminate our minds.

4. Govardhan Prayer

गोवर्धनधरं वन्दे गोपालं गोपरूपिणम्॥

Govardhanadharam Vande Gopalam Goparupinam.

Meaning: I offer my salutations to Lord Gopal, who lifted Govardhan Hill and protected the people and cattle of Braj.

Devotees can chant these mantras with devotion during the puja, meditation and aarti. There is no requirement to follow a particular number of repetitions for a simple household worship.

Govardhan Puja 2026: Cow Worship (Gau Puja) Rituals

Cow worship is one of the most important traditions associated with Govardhan Puja. Cows are revered in Hinduism as symbols of nourishment, motherhood, abundance and selfless giving. Lord Krishna is also known as Gopal and Govinda, names associated with his love and protection of cows

The following rituals are traditionally performed during Gau Puja:

  1. Clean the cowshed: Devotees clean the cowshed and the surrounding area before beginning the worship.
  2. Decorate the cows: Cows and calves are traditionally adorned with flower garlands and decorative cloth. Any decoration should be comfortable and safe for the animals.
  3. Apply tilak: A small tilak may be applied gently on the forehead using roli or turmeric, provided the material is safe for the animal.
  4. Offer fresh food: Devotees offer suitable fodder, green grass and other cow-safe food. The first portion of freshly prepared food may also be offered according to family tradition.
  5. Perform aarti: Aarti is performed with devotion while praying for the health and well-being of the cattle.
  6. Seek blessings: Devotees respectfully bow before the cows and pray for happiness, prosperity and protection.
People who do not have cows at home can visit a gaushala, offer fodder or contribute towards the care and welfare of cows. Feeding cows responsibly and ensuring their well-being are meaningful ways to observe this tradition.

Annakut Bhog: What Food Is Offered to Lord Krishna?

Annakut literally means a mountain of food. On Govardhan Puja, devotees prepare a large variety of vegetarian dishes and arrange them as an offering to Lord Krishna.

Some popular dishes prepared for Annakut Bhog include:
