Why Are 56 Bhog Items Offered to Lord Krishna?
The tradition of offering 56 dishes, popularly known as Chhappan Bhog, is associated with an interesting story from Lord Krishna's childhood.According to popular Hindu tradition, young Krishna used to enjoy eight meals throughout the day. These included breakfast, snacks, lunch and other meals offered at different times. When Lord Indra unleashed torrential rainfall over Braj, Krishna lifted Govardhan Hill on his little finger and protected the villagers and their cattle for seven consecutive days.
During this period, Krishna remained engaged in protecting everyone and did not take his usual meals. After the rain stopped and the villagers were safe, they wanted to express their gratitude to him.
Since Krishna had missed eight meals each day for seven days, the devotees prepared 56 different food offerings (8 × 7 = 56) to make up for the meals he had missed. This is believed to be the origin of the Chhappan Bhog tradition.
Although different Vaishnava traditions have their own explanations and variations, the story remains a popular part of Govardhan Puja celebrations.
