Durga Puja 2026: Why Maa Durga Arrives With Her Children and What Each One Represents

Durga Puja 2026 is one of the most important festivals for devotees of Maa Durga, particularly across West Bengal and among Bengali communities. During the festival, Goddess Durga is traditionally worshipped with four divine figures beside her Lord Ganesha, Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Kartikeya and Goddess Saraswati. Together, they form a familiar and deeply symbolic Durga Puja tableau.

But why does Maa Durga arrive with her children? According to popular Hindu tradition and Bengali cultural belief, the Goddess returns to her maternal home on Earth during Durga Puja, accompanied by her children. Her arrival is celebrated as a joyful homecoming, while her eventual departure on Vijayadashami represents her return to her divine abode.

Why Does Maa Durga Come With Her Children?

In Bengali tradition, Goddess Durga is viewed not only as the powerful divine mother who defeats Mahishasura, but also as a daughter returning to her parental home. Her annual visit is therefore associated with family, affection and celebration.

Her four children accompany her during this visit. Each deity represents important qualities of life, creating a symbolic family arrangement that combines strength, prosperity, wisdom and success. The arrangement may vary slightly between traditional depictions, but the four deities remain an integral part of the Durga Puja idol setup.

Lord Ganesha: Symbol of Wisdom and Auspiciousness

Lord Ganesha is traditionally associated with wisdom, intelligence and the removal of obstacles. He is worshipped before many important Hindu rituals and ceremonies. During Durga Puja, his presence alongside Maa Durga represents auspicious beginnings and the removal of difficulties. Ganesha is also commonly depicted with his consort, Goddess Lakshmi, in Bengali Durga Puja traditions.

Goddess Lakshmi: Symbol of Prosperity

Goddess Lakshmi represents wealth, prosperity, abundance and good fortune. Her presence beside Maa Durga adds an important dimension to the festival, reminding devotees that prosperity is not limited to material wealth but can also include happiness and well-being. Her association with the Durga Puja tableau reflects the traditional desire for a prosperous and harmonious household.

Lord Kartikeya: Symbol of Courage and Victory

Lord Kartikeya, also known as Kartik, is associated with courage, strength and military power. He is traditionally regarded as a warrior deity and represents the ability to face challenges with determination. His presence with Maa Durga complements the central theme of Durga Puja, the triumph of good over evil and righteousness over destructive forces.

Goddess Saraswati: Symbol of Knowledge

Goddess Saraswati represents knowledge, learning, wisdom, music and the arts. Her presence reminds devotees that intellectual and creative abilities are also forms of divine blessing. For students, artists, musicians and scholars, Saraswati holds particular importance, making her presence in the Durga Puja tableau especially meaningful.
