According to Hindu beliefs, sisters perform the tilak ceremony and pray to God for their brothers' long lives, good health and success. Brothers, in turn, offer gifts and reaffirm their commitment to supporting and protecting their sisters.

The festival is also associated with Lord Yama, the god of death, and his sister Goddess Yamuna. Therefore, Bhai Dooj is also called Yama Dwitiya. Taking a holy dip in the Yamuna River on this day is considered particularly auspicious. Devotees believe that observing the rituals with devotion brings blessings, happiness and protection from untimely death.

Bhai Dooj 2026 Puja Vidhi and Rituals

Bhai Dooj is celebrated with traditional rituals and prayers that reflect the affection between siblings. Although customs may differ across regions and families, the central tradition remains the same: sisters pray for their brothers' well-being through the tilak ceremony.

Here is a simple traditional puja vidhi:

  1. Morning preparations: Sisters wake up early, take a bath and prepare for the puja. They clean the worship area and arrange the puja thali with roli, akshat, diya, sweets, flowers and other necessary items.
  2. Prepare the puja thali: Place a diya, roli, rice grains, sweets, flowers and a sacred thread in the thali. Some families also include coconut and fruits as part of their traditional offerings.
  3. Perform the tilak ceremony: During the auspicious muhurat, sisters apply a tilak of roli and rice grains on their brothers' foreheads.
  4. Perform aarti: Sisters perform their brothers' aarti and pray for their long life, good health, happiness and prosperity.
  5. Offer sweets: Sisters offer sweets to their brothers and may prepare a special festive meal for them.
  6. Exchange gifts and blessings: Brothers give gifts to their sisters as a gesture of love and appreciation. Both siblings seek blessings and celebrate their relationship.
Devotees may also worship Lord Yama and Goddess Yamuna according to their family traditions.

Bhai Dooj Story: The Divine Bond of Yama and Yamuna

According to Hindu mythology, Bhai Dooj is associated with the story of Lord Yama and his sister Goddess Yamuna. The two shared a loving bond, but Lord Yama was often occupied with his responsibilities and could not visit his sister frequently.

One day, Goddess Yamuna invited her brother to her home. Lord Yama accepted her invitation and visited her on Kartik Shukla Dwitiya. Yamuna welcomed him warmly, applied a tilak on his forehead, performed aarti and prepared a delicious meal for him.

Pleased with her affection and hospitality, Lord Yama asked his sister to seek a blessing. Yamuna requested that every brother who visits his sister on this auspicious day and receives her tilak should be blessed with happiness, prosperity and a long life.

Lord Yama granted her wish. Since then, the day has been celebrated as Yama Dwitiya or Bhai Dooj. According to religious beliefs, brothers who receive tilak from their sisters on this day are blessed with protection and well-being.
