American businessman and billionaire Bill Gates invested in an Australian startup aimed at reducing methane emissions from cow burps. The company is expected to research livestock food supplements to reduce methane emissions, which is the second most abundant greenhouse gas after carbon dioxide, according to reports.

Methane is produced by livestock such as cows, goats, and deer as their stomachs digest tough materials such as grass. During the fermentation process, methane gas is produced, with the majority of it being belched out again. Rumin8, an Australian startup, is working on a dietary supplement that uses red seaweed as a source of synthetic material to inhibit the production of the gas.

Bill Gates has been vocal about climate change. In a blog post in December 2022, he stated that rising temperatures have begun to have an impact on society and that action should be taken to protect future generations. He said he can sum up the solution to climate change in two sentences: we need to eliminate global greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Extreme weather is already causing more suffering, and if we do not achieve net-zero emissions, our grandchildren will grow up in a significantly worse world."
