Jiang Zemin's demise has reduced the number of voices within the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) that might express opinions contrary to those of Xi Jinping, strengthening Chinese President's authoritarian rule within the CCP, according to Nikkei Asia. Jiang Zemin died at the age of 96 due to leukaemia and multiple organ failure, according to a Chinese Communist Party statement.

China's former leader Jiang Zemin came to power after the Tiananmen Square protests. Jiang governed China during the 1990s, overseeing the country's transition to a market economy.

Jiang and Zeng Qinghong, a close friend and former vice president, assisted Xi in becoming the party's leader ten years ago. Jiang and his followers conflicted with then-President Hu Jintao's party of Communist Youth League leaders. Hu had hoped for Li Keqiang, China's current premier, to succeed him. According to Nikkei Asia, the Jiang group endorsed Xi since it did not have a clear candidate.

Jiang and Zeng intended to maintain control over choices through Xi. However, Xi began to undermine many of Jiang's accomplishments. Following his takeover of the Chinese Communist Party, Xi launched a broad anti-corruption campaign that culminated in the dismissal of one Jiang faction member after another. He consolidated the authority distributed among the party's leading personalities into his own hands.

Xi, the all powerful general secretary of the Chinese Communist Party, now has direct authority over all critical power fields, including the military, judiciary, police, propaganda, and foreign policy.
