Dr Anthony Fauci of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID) held a press conference to discuss the current situation regarding the Covid-19 pandemic. He stepped back and waited for the reporters to ask questions. The journalists present started shouting questions, which is a common practice. This led to White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre requesting reporters to await their turn in asking questions not to waste Dr Fauci's or their colleagues' time. She began to call on reporters one by one to ask their questions.

A reporter, Diana Glebova of the Daily Caller, had been asking about Covid-19's origins. She was not called on. She was supported by her colleague Simon Ateba, the chief White House correspondent for Today News Africa, who argued that she was asking a valid question. However, he was also interrupted by Jean-Pierre, and he accused her of playing favourites. She continued to call on other reporters.
