Who is Giorgia Meloni? Meet Italy's first woman, far-right premier after World War II
Giorgia Meloni from the Brothers of Italy party has been sworn in as the country's new premier. It was the first time after WWII that a far-right leader would be Italy's premier.

The Brothers of Italy party was the highest vote-getter in the national election held last month. The newly-appointed premier announced her cabinet on October 21. Her 24 ministers include five technocrats who do not represent any political party. Besides, six of the ministers are women.

Giorgia Meloni's coalition allies comprise the League of Matteo Salvini, a right-wing group, and Forza Italia, a conservative party led by former Premier Silvio Berlusconi. While taking the oath, Meloni pledged to be faithful to the country's post-war republic. Meloni signed the pledge, which was counter-signed by President Sergio Mattarella.
Giorgia Meloni will convene her first Cabinet meeting on October 23. Meloni has replaced Mario Draghi, an ex-chief of the European Central Bank, as the premier. The President appointed Mario in 2021. Mario was appointed to lead a pandemic national unity coalition. However, Meloni had refused to join the union, insisting on the polls. The election was held on September 25.
