After days of silence, Chinese President Xi Jinping appeared on state television on Tuesday. His absence from the media generated speculation of a 'coup' on social media, which further started the #Chinacoup trend for days.
However, putting an end to the rumour, Xi Jinping was filmed wearing a mask on CCTV footage while attending an exhibition along with Premier Li Keqiang to celebrate the achievements of his era.
Georg Fahrion, a Beijing correspondent for the German news outlet Der Spiegel, mocked the coup theories by tweeting images of everyday life in Beijing, claiming that Xi Jinping had conducted his investigation at great personal risk.
