Former Tata Sons chairman Cyrus Mistry was killed in a car accident on Sunday while he was travelling from Ahmedabad to Mumbai in a Mercedes car.

The accident took place around 3.15 pm, when Mistry was travelling to Mumbai from Ahmedabad. The accident took place on a bridge over the Surya river, said Police officials.

Various political leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the demise of the Indian business tycoon.

Cyrus Pallonji Mistry was born on July 4, 1968, to construction tycoon Pallonji Mistry and his wife Patsy Perin Dubash in Bombay (Mumbai), Maharashtra.

He was the youngest son of construction tycoon Pallonji Mistry, who owned a significant stake, close to 19%, in the Tata group.

Mistry was a civil engineer graduate from Imperial College of London, and held a Masters degree in Management from the London Business School.

He is survived by older brother Shapoor Mistry and two sisters, Laila and Aloo. His sister, Aloo, is married to Noel Tata, the half-brother of Ratan Tata.

His sister Laila is in-charge of a number of business ventures established by her dad. She is married to a London-based portfolio fund manager named Rustom Jehangir.

Mistry took charge as chairman of Tata Sons in December 2012, post Ratan Tata’s retirement from the position. He succeeded his father as one of the board members of Tata Sons, the holding company that controls the Tata Group.

He was the sixth chairman of the group and the second chairman to not carry the Tata name, after Nowroji Saklatwala.

He also served as the Managing Director of the Shapoorji Pallonji Group and catered his family-run construction and infrastructure businesses in 1994 when he was merely 26-years-old.

Tata vs Mistry
Mistry was removed as Tata Sons chairman in a surprise move in October 2016. Later, in December 2016, two Mistry family-backed investment firms - Cyrus Investments Pvt Ltd and Sterling Investments Corporation Pvt Ltd - had moved the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT), alleging mismanagement by Tata Sons.

The ouster of Cyrus Mistry from Tata Sons blew up into one of the biggest corporate battles in India’s history. Allegations and counter-allegations flew thick and fast since.

Mistry was first a member of the committee that was formed to find a successor to Ratan Tata. However, later, he became a candidate himself which raised questions on the entire process.

In February 2017, Mistry was removed as a Director on the board of Tata Sons, the holding company of Tata Group firms.
