Bengaluru: With a donation of Rs 7,904 crore, Wipro founder-chairman Azim Premji and family topped the EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2020, followed by Shiv Nadar, founder chairman of HCL Technologies, and Mukesh Ambani, chairman, Reliance Industries. The report tallied Premji’s donation at Rs 22 crore per day.
Kumar Mangalam Birla, chairman, Aditya Birla Group was in fourth spot, while Anil Agarwal, chairman, Vedanta Group came in fifth, EdelGive Foundation said in a statement. According to the foundation, total donations have increased by 175% to Rs 12,050 crore in 2020. Binny Bansal, 37, cofounder of Flipkart, is the youngest on the list. Rohini Nilekani, who donates through Rohini Nilekani Philanthropies, is India’s most generous woman, followed by Anu Aga and family of Thermax.
With 36 individuals, Mumbai is home to most of the philanthropists on the list this year, followed by New Delhi with 20 individuals and Bengaluru with 10. Twenty-eight philanthropists entered the list this year for the first time. The top new additions include SD Shibulal of Infosys with a donation of Rs 32 crore, followed by Amit and Archana Chandra of A.T.E. Chandra Foundation who donated Rs 27 crore, and Shri Ram Beriwala and Shyam Sunder Beriwala of Shyam Steels who donated Rs 19 crore. “The preferred cause of India’s top philanthropists has been education, although poverty alleviation has grown dramatically to become the second most popular cause this year,” said Anas Rahman Junaid, managing director of Hurun India.

Premji pipped HCL Technologies' Shiv Nadar, who had earlier topped the list collated by Hurun Report India and Edelgive Foundation, by a wide margin. Nadar's donations stood at Rs 795 crore for FY20 as against Rs 826 crore in the year-ago period. Premji had donated Rs 426 crore in the previous fiscal.
