The Centre and the Trinamool government have been at loggerheads over the handling of the pandemic in West Bengal.
NEW DELHI: Alleging that the West Bengal government is trying to hide the real figures of Covid-19 patients and not providing enough protection to medics dealing with these cases, MPs and officebearers of the BJP state unit held protests on Sunday. They alleged the state government was not letting rations sent by the Centre reach the intended beneficiaries.

BJP slammed chief minister Mamata Banerjee for the death of a senior doctor due to Covid-19. It is the first case in the state where a medic had succumbed to the disease. While condoling his death, Banerjee did not mention the cause. BJP alleged doctors have not been provided with Protective Equipment and other safeguards.

MPs Soumitra Khan (Bishnupur) and Jyotirmay Singh Mahato (Purulia), Union minister Babul Supriyo, BJP national secretary Arvind Menon and nominated Rajya Sabha member Swapan Dasgupta held a protest in Delhi. The protest at the Kolkata residence of BJP’s West Bengal unit chief Dilip Ghosh was attended by several party leaders. In Indore, BJP general secretary incharge of West Bengal, Kailash Vijayvargiya also staged a dharna at his residence.

The death of Biplab Kanti Dasgupta, assistant director of West Bengal Health Services, allegedly due to Covid-19, on Sunday morning led BJP to sharpen its attack on the state government for not providing enough PPEs to the medical staff and taking other measures for their safety.

Supriyo referred to the CM’s condolence message on Dasgupta’s death, saying she had played with words “shamefully, deceitfully” in her tribute. Supriyo said she did not even mention once that he had lost his life while trying to help other Covid-19 patients. “How cunning is that but she exposes herself completely,” he said on Twitter.

Meanwhile, West Bengal Doctors Forum issued a statement saying Dasgupta died due to Covid-19 while his wife is battling with the disease. The Centre and the Trinamool government have been at loggerheads over the handling of the pandemic in West Bengal. The BJP leaders alleged the state government was passing off Covid-19 fatalities as deaths due to other causes.
