Billionaire wars: Bloomberg and Trump may cater to the 'Aam-erican aadmi'. Really?

US may get a choice of eating 'rich'.

America, if former NYC mayor Michael Bloomberg does make it as the Democrat candidate for the 2020 US elections, will have two billionaires — President Donald Trump being the other one — fighting for top-dog spot.
Jean-Jacques Rousseau, a man who knew a thing or two about riling the masses, once observed, ‘When the people shall have nothing more to eat, they’ll eat the rich.’ America, if former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg does make it as the Democrat candidate for the 2020 US elections, and become the contender for the post of president, will have two billionaires — President Donald Trump being the other one — fighting for top-dog spot. The empirically-yet-to-be-confirmed ‘1%’ owning more than 80% of US wealth, will then be choosing between two representatives of that 1%. How does that measure up to representative politics?

To quote the Rousseau again, ‘The world of reality has its limits; the world of imagination is boundless.’ So, one can quite boundlessly imagine that Messers Trump and Bloomberg may actually vie for the support of the same ‘mob’. “…as president, I have the skills to fix what is broken in our great nation.” Which is pretty much how Trump also pitched it in the run-up to his 2017 presidency.

So, two very rich people promising to take care of the American aam aadmi? The die may be cast against that, despite nothing stopping very rich people being concerned about the not-so-rich. But who knows? Perhaps what we are seeing is something in the freezer for the ‘not-1%’ to consume on when the time is right.

One of the most famous scandals in American history that led to the downfall of an American president was triggered by a phone call. Security guard Frank Wills was stationed at the Democratic National Committee at the Watergate complex. On June 17, 1972, while doing his rounds, Wills found duct tape on door locks. Suspecting a breakin, he called the police, which led to five men being arrested. Investigations showed that the men were connected to President Richard Nixon’s reelection campaign, and they had been caught wiretapping phones and stealing documents. Nixon tried to cover up the crimes, but eventually resigned on August 9, 1974.

Alec Baldwin was in the middle of a bitter divorce with his then wife Kim Basinger, which also involved a custody battle for their daughter, Ireland. On April 11, 2007, Baldwin left an irate voicemail for Basinger in which he called his 11-year-old daughter a “rude, thoughtless little pig”. Baldwin had to apologise for losing his composure and chalked it down to stress caused due to the divorce. In another voicemail, Baldwin said he contemplated suicide. “I spoke to a lot of professionals, who helped me. If I committed suicide, [ex-wife Kim Basinger’s side] would have considered that a victory. Destroying me was their avowed goal.”
