Forced labour lose $21 billion in unpaid wages: ILO

Victims of forced labour lose roughly $21 billion annually in unpaid wages, the International Labour Organisation said on Tuesday.

ADDIS ABABA: Victims of forced labour lose roughly $21 billion annually in unpaid wages, the International Labour Organisation said on Tuesday.

Yaw Ofosu, an ILO expert on forced labour, told a news conference that the $21 billion "represents the amount stolen from the victims of forced labour, like unpaid wages, unremunerated overtime and others deductions."

Africa ranks among the top three regions where forced labour thrives, said the ILO in a report, warning the practice was likely to get worse in the wake of the global financial crisis.

"In such a crisis situation, it is the vulnerable who suffer the most.

"It is thus possible that the global crisis will worsen the forced labour phenomenon, including in Africa," said the report released on Tuesday.

Sub-Saharan Africa is the region with the third highest incidence of forced labour in relation to population, after Asia and Latin America, it said.

"And serious abuses have been reported in a number of countries," it said, adding "slavery related practices in some Western African countries remain a contentious issue".
