Bhajji was banned on Monday for 11 matches of IPL following his spat with Sree Santh at the end of Mumbai Indians match against Kings XI Punjab on Friday.
It was a wilful act and insurance covers only acts of peril and not such wilful acts. Peril refer to any incident that is unforeseen and not done wilfully by the individual or the entity covered by the insurance. For example, if any player is injured during the game, it would have been covered, but not such wilful acts, Oriental Insurance deputy general manager Rajesh Malhotra told ET.
Additionally, the personal accident covers that were seven times the match fee for every match and the travel insurance that was offered by Oriental to all players during the entire tenure of the event will also cease while Bhajji remains banned for these 11 matches. It will come into play once he gets into the team again, he added.
Players are not covered for such wilful acts and the loss arising out of it to the player himself and to the team also remains uncovered, Mr Malhotra added.
Harbhajan had been signed on by the Mumbai franchise team owned by Reliance Industries for a whopping $850,000 (approximately Rs 3.4 crore).
