Delta likely to take a new route in India

Mumbai: The merger of Delta and Northwest would result in a change in their India operations, though its too early to say how the merged entity is going to rearrange its flights across the world, said airline sources.

Both Delta and Northwest have flights to India. Delta has a daily, non-stop flight on the Mumbai-New York route, while Northwest operates to the US with a stopover in Amsterdam. Northwest operates its flights through a code-share arrangement with Dutch carrier KLM, which was earlier taken over by Air France. Daily flights to Mumbai are operated by Northwest, while those to Delhi are operated by KLM. The marketing is done by KLM. All the three airlines are part of a global grouping called SkyTeam.

Delta had, in recent years, trimmed its operations in India. It laid off about 150 employees, mostly ground staff and flight attendants two years ago. As of now its sales and distribution operations in India are managed by the airlines GSA, Interglobe. Growing competition has begun to impact foreign airlines flying in to the country. The synergy from the merger is expected to give Delta more flexibility.
