More delay in 3G allocation

The process of allocating spectrum may be delayed further as department of telecom (DoT) is yet to finalise the criteria for judging seniority, reports Niranjan Bharti from New Delhi.

NEW DELHI: The process of allocating spectrum may be delayed further as department of telecom (DoT) is yet to finalise the criteria for judging seniority, reports Niranjan Bharti from New Delhi.

We are in the process of finalising a foolproof mechanism for spectrum allocation to avoid any legal hassles and this will take some more time, a DoT source informed ET.

The process would be finalised in two to three weeks, he added. Existing players under the banner of Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) have opposed DoTs move to allocate spectrum on dual-usage basisa step which enabled Reliance Communications to get the licence ahead of others.

The matter was challenged in the TDSAT and the Delhi High Court. TDSAT has deferred the matter till May, 2008, while the High Court has reserved its judgement.

It is likely that DoT will start allocation from the southern states.
