New telcos with valid license welcome to join us: COAI

NEW DELHI: Cellular Operators Association of India, a lobby of existing GSM players, on Tuesday invited new telecom players with valid licenses to join them and work towards providing world-class services in the country.
"We will be happy to take them into our fold. In fact, some of the new players have approached us," COAI officials said.
COAI, which is currently headed by Idea Cellular Managing Director Sanjiv Aga, will have a new chairman from Vodafone-Essar, the officials said, adding that the new vice-chairman, who hails from Aircel, has also been elected unopposed.
Asim Ghosh, Managing Director of Vodafone-Essar, would take over from Aga at the next Annual General Meeting to be held shortly and Sunita Reddy of Aircel would become Vice Chairman and will succeed Ghosh next year.
Asked whether COAI is dominated by big telecom players, they said that unopposed election of Reddy of Aircel as Vice Chairman is ample proof of regional players like Aircel getting equal weightage.
COAI's remarks are significant as some of the new telecom players had accused the lobby of catering to the interests of big telecom operators only.
COAI has been fighting for its rights ever since the opening up of this sector and today it takes pride in bringing the sector at a level where more than seven million new subscribers are joining every month, they said.
In India, telecom tariffs are perhaps the lowest in the world and this has happened only with the constant and collective efforts of all the telecom players.
