Fourth census on MSMEs to be out next year

The government is likely to complete the fourth census of micro, small and medium enterprises, assessing the number of firms in the country by next year.

NEW DELHI: The government is likely to complete the fourth census of micro, small and medium enterprises, assessing the number of firms in the country by next year.

"The census will be complete by early next year, throwing light on the MSMEs in each category and their equity base resource requirements," Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Jawahar Sircar told reporters here.

Currently, there are three crore MSME units in the country. The census would collect data on the number of firms falling in the categories of micro, small and medium, which have invested up to Rs 10 crore in plant and machinery.

Sircar said the census would also provide information on production, raw material, employment, exports, assets, plant and machinery, products and services, net worth, loan taken by enterprises and outstanding debt, besides assessing the sick units under each category.

The census helps in assessing the increase in number of MSMEs over a period of time and employment generated, he said.

Speaking at a PHD seminar on 'Interface on Risk Capital for MSMEs', Sircar said the three crore MSME units account for Rs 47,000 crore of the banking sector's debt exposure. However, debt needs of the sector were estimated at nearly Rs 67,000 crore last fiscal.
