IIM Calcutta raises fee, grants

Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta (IIMC), has decided to hike annual fee by Rs 1 lakh per year from the 2008-09 academic session.

KOLKATA: Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta (IIMC), has decided to hike annual fee by Rs 1 lakh per year from the 2008-09 academic session. Students will now have to fork out Rs 3 lakh per year. The previous hike was last year when fee was raised from Rs 1.75 lakh to Rs 2 lakh a year.

The IIMC board of governors took the decision to increase annual fee for the flagship two-year post-graduate programme in management course on Tuesday. The decision to raise the fee was taken in view of rising costs and will be implemented from the coming academic session, IIMC director Shekhar Chaudhuri told ET.

The premier institute has also arrived at the decision of raising the eligibility limit for students applying for scholarships. While a student is now eligible for applying for a scholarship if his/her family income is less than Rs 2 lakh, from 2008-09 , students with a family income of less than Rs 4 lakh will be eligible to apply.

This was entirely an internal decision taken by the board, said Mr Chaudhuri. We are now likely to be offering some 50-60 scholarships a year, instead of the 25 at present. Already, nationalised banks offer educational loans up to Rs 7.5 lakh without any collateral . But we took this initiative to facilitate any student who may still be facing some difficulties , he added.

IIMCs fee hike is in line with other IIMs. While IIMAhmedabad is expected to raise its fees to Rs 3 lakh per year from the 2008-09 session, compared to Rs 2 lakh now, IIM-Bangalore is likely to raise its fee from the present Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 2.75 lakh per annum.
