Ban on mobile phone use while driving enforced from May 8

Law prohibiting mobile phone use while driving will be enforced from May 8 and digital cameras would be installed to monitor violators in the capital, a senior police officer has said.

BANGKOK: Law prohibiting mobile phone use while driving will be enforced from May 8 and digital cameras would be installed to monitor violators in the capital, a senior police officer has said.

Deputy commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Bureau Phanu Kerdlarpphol said: the law banning mobile phone use by drivers was published in the Royal Gazette beginning February 8, and would take effect three months from that date.

Violators would be fined from 400 to 1,000 baht (USD 12-30).

Drivers, however, are advised to use hands-free accessories while driving instead.

"If traffic police see drivers using mobile phones while driving, police can arrest them immediately as it is a flagrant offense," the deputy commissioner said.

He added that the Traffic Police Division would also provide digital cameras to 88 police stations in metropolitan Bangkok to monitor and record pictures to identify the violators.
