Indian SMEs lead IT spend growth in BRIC group: Study

NEW DELHI: The IT spending of Indian small and medium enterprises is growing at the fastest rate among the BRIC countries, a study has said.
The SMEs' IT spend is set to continue at a robust 24 per cent, the fastest among all BRIC countries, with Russia, China and Brazil following at 22.9 per cent, 20.4 per cent and 19.4 per cent respectively, the Microsoft-AMI Partners Report on IT Adoption in Indian SMEs said.
Customer push and compliance needs play important roles in triggering the IT purchase decision, the study added.
Out of the total respondents surveyed, 41 per cent stated that IT helped them improve efficiency, and a 39 per cent finally adopted the technology to meet the need for regular interaction with large Indian and international customers, the study said.
"SMEs are forced to provide more customisation, improve communication and turnaround time and comply with regulatory norms," Microsoft India Group Director, SME, Rajeev Mittal said.

The Indian SMEs are on a firm growth trajectory, according to the report which said 60 per cent of PC-using business expects 20 per cent growth.
AMI Partners estimates that out of 3.98 million SMEs in India, retail (41 per cent) and manufacturing (17 per cent) are the top two verticals constituting 58 per cent of the SMEs in the country.
The report also called for the need of policy makers, regulators, IT companies and financing intermediaries to come together to help SMEs overcome the challenges of local and global competition contribute to country's growth by leveraging the power of information Technology.
