M&M goes to academia for talent hunt

As the Indian automobile industry is facing an acute crunch of designers, M&M has reached out to the academia for a talent hunt.

AHMEDABAD: When the Indian automobile industry is facing an acute crunch of designers, Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) has reached out to the academia for a talent hunt.

In an exercise meant to bridge the gap between industry and academia, the automobile company had sought creative inputs from students pursuing courses in engineering and automobile design across the country most of which could eventually be absorbed in future machines designed by it.

The KC Mahindra Award for Excellence in Automotive Design hosted at the National Institute of Design (NID) signals the arrival of industry-institute partnerships for innovation, said senior vice-president (R&D and global product development) Arun Jaura while awarding the select few for their designs.

Fifty nine students from across the country had competed for the award focusing on Long Haul Truck Cabin for the Year 2015 theme.

Rajiv Kalitha and Kiran S from the Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology , Bhopal, took away the first prize for their project while Shamit Kulkarni, Navneen Inamdar, Narhari Nadgir and Palaksha Nadgir from KL Society’s Gogate Institute of Technology-Belgaum shared the second position.

NID’s Divesh Mistry ranked third in the competition. The awards were judged on the basis of their originality and futuristic considerations, practicability of the concept, aesthetic blending with vehicle style, vehicle packaging and quality of sketches and drawings.
