Konkan Rail Corp scripts a turnaround story
The operating surplus of the corporation increased by 74% in 2005-06 and is steadily increasing by 25-30% per year.
Not only it has presented some remarkable innovations to the world, viz anti-collision device (ACD) and Sky Bus Metro in the decade, it has also made a complete financial turnaround and is a financial success story.
There has been a major turn around in revenues of the Corporation over the last two years. The operating surplus of the corporation increased by 74% in 2005-06 and is steadily increasing by 25-30% per year. The freight earnings have shown a significant quantum jump in last two years, increasing by a record 71% in 2005-06 and surging by almost 25 to 30% per annum, for the first time surpassing the coaching earnings.
The total earnings are expected to increase from Rs.279 crore in 2004-05 to about Rs.470 crore in current financial year, exhibiting a steady increase of about 15 to 20 per cent per year.
The operating ratio has significantly dropped by 12% in 2005-06 and further by 5 to 6% during 2006-07.
The railway has also completed nine years of Ro-Ro (Roll on Roll off) operation of truck-on-train service on January 26, 2008. This service has established that railways and roadways can exist in a symbiotic relationship. According to statement, the corporation has earned more than Rs.90 crore from Ro-Ro service.
