Believe it or not, many young adults are spending more waking hours playing games than teenagers or kids. Be it sports, cards, puzzle, action or strategy games, young adults are enjoying the excitement and change that comes with playing games online. Ketan Soni, a Pune-based software engineer plays online games to kill boredom. He says, “I like to play table-tennis , cricket, racing and pool. It’s cool to play games online as it transports you to another world altogether . And the craze for these games among adults can be understood from the fact that most companies block common game sites, because when the employees play games online during work, the network traffic increases, leading to slow Internet service.”
It may seem juvenile, but many even take management lessons from the games they play. Dhruv Naik, a 24-yearold entrepreneur, loves to play strategy games. “It is fun to play games like Commando, Age of Mythologies, Rise of Nations, Age of Empires and Civilisations. Online strategy games help in enhancing my decision making skills and leadership qualities, besides providing the break I need from my hectic work schedule,” he says.
Some professionals indulge in online and video games to escape the drudgery of day-to-day life. Like Naren Kaushik, senior copywriter with a Delhi firm, says, “I feel carefree like a child when I play games like Xbox and Playstation. These games take me away from the everyday rigmaroles, when no responsibilities come to my mind. Secondly, video games help you do things you can’t do in reality. Like, if I play football or cricket online, I get to be a star, which I may not, otherwise.”
With adults being addicted to online and video games, gaming companies are cashing in on this trend by introducing newer games. Rahul Sigtia, business development manager with a gaming company, says, “Many corporates are coming up with websites that provide a platform where people can play games. Moreover, there are many professional gamers, who play and earn money on these sites.”
