Enough spectrum for all: Government
The government on Wednesday assured the telecom tribunal TDSAT that enough spectrum would be available for existing as well as new players after allotting radio frequencies to Reliance Communications for its GSM foray.
Appearing on behalf of the government in the telecom tribunal, Solicitor General GE Vahanvati said: “It’s absolutely nonsense that after giving spectrum to RCOM, no spectrum would be left. We will show this to you during the next hearing on January 24.”
Mr Vahanvati also assured the tribunal that the government would utilise the available spectrum in an efficient manner. The government’s reply was in response to TDSAT chairman Arun Kumar asking it to furnish a report on spectrum-allocation based on the Telecom Engineering Centre’s study and the findings of the expert committee constituted by the DoT.
The tribunal was hearing a petition filed by the Cellular Operators’ Association of India (COAI), the body representing leading GSM players, challenging the government’s move to approve dual technology, under which operators can offer both GSM and CDMA services under the same licence.
TDSAT adjourned the hearing on GSM operators’ petition on spectrum allocation and crossover technology — it will next hear the petition filed by COAI on January 24.
