Govt expects Rs 2-lakh cr investment in aviation in 10 yrs
The government is expecting to draw investment to the tune of Rs 2,00,000 crore in the aviation sector during next ten years.
"We expect that the civil aviation sector will attract an investment of Rs 2 lakh crore during next ten years," he said at a function for laying the foundation stone for the new integrated terminal building of Chandigarh airport here.
Reiterating government's commitment to achieve inclusive growth, Patel sought support from states especially Punjab and Haryana for the development of country's aviation sector.
"The states should take necessary steps in building up the infrastructure which is still inadequate in the country and the union government will always be ready for helping them in this regard," he said, adding that the government had chosen 35 non-metro airports including that of Amritsar and Chandigarh in the country which would be upgraded as required.
Haryana Chief Minister, Bhupinder Singh Hooda urged civil aviation minister Praful Patel to convert Chandigarh airport into an international airport which would be beneficial for Haryana, Punjab and Chandigarh.
"For this purpose, Chandigarh, Punjab and Haryana should be made equal partners in this project," he said.
Punjab Chief minister Parkash Singh Badal urged the government for the setting up of an aviation university in Patiala for the development of sector in the state. He also urged Patel to set up terminals in Bathinda and Adampur.
Earlier Patel laid the foundation stone of new integrated terminal building at the airport to be constructed at a cost of Rs. 77.97 crore. Expected to be completed by March 2009, this terminal would have the capacity of handling 200 departing and 200 arriving passengers.
