Indices kick start New Year on flat note

At 10 am, BSE's Sensex opened 80 points or 0.4 pc higher at 20,367.46 while NSE's Nifty slipped 14 points or 0.22 pc to 6124.95.

MUMBAI: Key indices opened on a flat note on the first trading session of the New Year, investor participation being low. Second rung stocks were buoyant. Sectorwise, consumer durables posted smart gains while IT and oil & gas shares remained weak.

At 10 am, BSE's Sensex opened 80 points or 0.4 per cent higher at 20,367.46 while NSE's Nifty slipped 14 points or 0.22 per cent to 6124.95.

Hindalco (up 1.33%), Tata Steel (1.31%), HDFC (0.89%), Cipla (0.87%), Maruti Suzuki (0.80%) and NTPC (0.76%) were the Sensex gainers.

Major losers were TCS (down 1.70%), Bharti Airtel (1.36%), Grasim Industries (1.25%), Wipro (0.78%), DLF (0.55%), ONGC (0.53%) and Satyam Computer Services (0.45%).

Market breadth was positive with 1,851 advances and 320 declines on BSE.
