Govt may lower 11th plan power generation target by 30 per cent
The government is considering lowering the power generation addition target for the 11th Five Year Plan (2007-2012) by nearly 30 per cent to 60,000 MW and also the investment proportionately.

NEW DELHI: The government is considering lowering the power generation addition target for the 11th Five Year Plan (2007-2012) by nearly 30 per cent to 60,000 MW and also the investment proportionately.
According to sources, Planning Commission has suggested in a consultation paper that the target be brought down to 60,000 MW from 78,500 MW decided earlier to make the targets realistic in view of slippages in the previous plans.
When contacted, power ministry officials declined to comment saying the ministry is yet to take a final call on such numbers being prepared by the Planning Commission.
Accordingly, the investments in the power sector has also been lowered proportionately to Rs 725,000 crore during the 11th plan from Rs 10,32,000 crore.
Sources said that government has been missing its targets in successive five year plans and has caused lots of embarrassment to the government of the day and thus an attempt has been made to have realistic targets which could be monitored and achieved.

Planning Commission has formed a Steering Committee to finalise the details.It is pertinent to mention that the Approach Paper for the 11th Five Year Plan had pegged the addition in power generation at 60,000 MW, which was increased to 78,500 MW by the Working Group headed by Power Secretary.
Power ministry has been maintaining so far that the target of 78,500 MW is achievable and most of the projects had taken off in this regard.
