ElBaradei to arrive on Tuesday
Even as a high-pitch debate over Indo-US nuclear deal takes a decisive mode, Mohamed ElBaradei, head of IAEA, is reaching Mumbai on Tuesday to discuss various issues with India’s nuclear establishment.
Though officials are claiming that the decision to put off the Tarapur visit has nothing to do with the current political scenario, the argument may not have many takers. A department of atomic energy (DAE) official said Mr ElBaradei would not be going to Tarapur for ‘purely logistical reasons’. It will take half the day out of his busy schedule in Mumbai if he visits Tarapur, said the DAE official.
Mr ElBaradei, however, will pay a visit to the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre and Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research and Education in Cancer at Kharghar in Navi Mumbai. His visit comes at a time when claims and counter-claims from the government and the Opposition have reached a crescendo.
Though the government has clarified that no India-specific measures will be discussed with the IAEA chief while in India and the discussions will be ‘informal’, the other side has expressed doubts about the government’s intention. Mr ElBaradei will leave for New Delhi on October 10.
